The botanical name for licorice is Glycyrrhiza glabra - licorice is a herb obtained from the roots of the plant. Known as the "Blue Flowering Snow Pea' plant grown in and around areas such as parts of China, Iran Iraq and Pakistan. Licorice is 50 times sweeter than sugar, so sweet it is bitter.
The Chinese have termed Licorice 'the great harmoniser' claiming that it blends and balances the effects of all herbs in a formula. Nearly two-thirds of all traditional formulas in Chinese Medicine contain Licorice. In China today, licorice is still the second most prescribed medicinal herb, behind Ginseng. Licorice roots have been found in the tombs of the Pharaohs attesting to the great respect for it's healing abilities. Hippocrates in the 4th century BC recommended licorice for the treatment of ulcers. One saying of an Arab Physician and philosopher, Avicenna is "the infused licorice purifies the voice and the trachea, and is useful in disorders and diets".
The major active ingredient glycyrrhizin was isolated and shown to have a cortisone-like action which explains its remarkable ability to reduce inflammation and speed the healing of ulcerated tissue.Today, naturopaths prescribe licorice for external ulcerous conditions such as burns, eczema and urticaria (which is swelling induced by poisonous plants or allergic reactions) and for internal ulcerous conditions such as bronchitis, sore throat and upper respiratory and gastro-intestinal tract infections. | | | Features: | |

Good, Healthy, Vegan-Friendly and lacks 'inert ingredients'.Nov 02, 2009
I don't even like licorice-not until I happened to stumble upon this in my local gourment grocery store in September, 2009. I originally bought this because it was the perfect snack according to the information label for my hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) attacks that I sometimes have while stuck in traffic. Each piece is 10 grams of carbohydrates so 3 pieces is all I need to get the sugars back to where they need to be. It is extremely portable as it is not perishable and will not melt in the summer heat of your car. The packaging is plastic lined on the inside to prevent it from going stale while on the shelf.
The texture is not quite like any previous licorice that I've tasted. It is not tough and does not crumble when chewed. It is more like a very soft taffy but not as sticky. It truly is a great product and if you like fresh fruit, eating healthy, and non-fat snacks then you will love this.

I love this licorice. It's soft, but not too soft. The flavor is actually tastes like real fruit! Not that raspy artificial flavoring that tastes like chemicals.
Very good stuff indeed. I would say these are like potato chips, you can't eat just...5? Hehehe.
