About the Producers The Hawkshead Relish Company is small and relatively young - they just opened their doors in rural Cumbria, in England's Lake District, in 2001 - but they've already taken home more than 30 "Great Taste Awards" for their Relishes, Pickles and Preserves. Hawkshead products are made by hand with no artificial colourings, flavourings or preservatives, and only the finest, freshest ingredients, including spices that are roasted and ground as they're needed. Great Taste Awards: Speciality Producer of the Year 2005! Not bad for a company that struggled through the foot and mouth crisis of 2001 when their café trade disappeared. It was then that the husband and wife team - Mark and Maria Whitehead - decided to release the relishes, jams and sauces that they made and served in their café to a wider audience by selling them to local delicatessens and farm shops. The products became so popular that Mark and Maria closed the café to concentrate on chutneys, eventually bringing their range up to 100 different varieties.
