Although bonito is one of the most important fish in Japanese cuisine, it is rarely eaten as the entrée of a meal. Instead, the dark, oily fish is carefully dried and shaved into very fine, intensely flavored flakes known as katsobushi.
These salty flakes are combined with kombu seaweed to make dashi, the base stock for most Japanese soups and broths. Dashi is present in so many Japanese foods that the cuisine would hardly be the same without it.

I'm rating this as a cat treatJun 29, 2010
I learned some time ago that dried shaved bonito flakes make a healthy and tasty cat treat. That's what I buy it for, not being much of a fan of fish soup. I can report that all of my cats love it, although my mischievous 4-month-old kitten likes to spread it all over the room before she eats it (something that's easy to do because the stuff is basically weightless). I can report that the purchase was without a single problem and my cats approve of the product. If you have never fed dried bonito to your cat and want to feed a very healthy treat, try this!

I know these bonito flakes are used for all kinds of japanese cooking by my cat moochie loves these things. We call them kitty chips and she will do just about anything to get them! They have made her coat nice and shiny and she seems to be a happier cat! Buy this product here because the dog and cat stores sell this for about twenty five dollars in smaller packages! You're cat will go crazy for them!

Bonito flakes for catsMay 19, 2008
Although these flakes are generally used for asian recipes, I generally buy them in bulk for my two cats. They absolutely love these. I call them kitty chips because they go through a serving pretty much like my husband goes through potato chips. The difference is that the tuna is low fat and very high in protein. Wish I could get my husband to like these.
